Children’s bedrooms: what is the correct position for the desk?
Furnishing the bedroom does not only mean creating an aesthetically pleasing space in line with the tastes of the children or young people who will live there on a daily basis, but also ensuring that each element is in the right place. Let’s think, for example, of the importance of desks for study and creative activities: this furnishing element, in fact, must not only be chosen in such a way as to provide an adequate support surface, but also positioned in the room taking various factors into account. Let us therefore try to understand what is the correct position for a desk in a child’s bedroom and how to optimise its use.
Avoiding distractions to be more productive
The desk is mainly used for studying or, in any case, for those activities that require greater concentration, which is why it is necessary to consider avoiding any source of distraction around this piece of furniture. It is best to avoid, for example, positioning it in front of a TV, a door or other busy areas of the house, preferring instead a quiet corner of the room, capable of “isolating” the children and encouraging attention.
If space permits, a good idea might be to use partitions or movable walls, if necessary, to create a real visual separation and reduce distractions from outside.
The position of the desk and the space for movement
When positioning the desk, the importance of space for movement should also not be underestimated. The desk user must also be comfortable in this respect, with space to stretch his or her legs and move freely. The advice is to provide a space of at least 60-80 cm depth and 100-120 cm width for the desk, as well as an adequate surrounding area for the chair and body movement.
Ergonomics and organisation to maximise comfort and practicality
Once all these elements have been considered, we can finally make the choice by looking at the comfort of the desk and practicality of use, two factors that also depend on the type of product chosen and the other furnishings in the room. The ergonomic aspect is of fundamental importance for a question of well-being, especially in a phase of life in which the body evolves over time. To avoid health problems related, for example, to poor posture, both the desk and the chair must be adjusted so that the child can sit with his or her feet resting on the floor, knees at a 90-degree angle and forearms parallel to the work surface.
It is therefore better to invest in a model such as Nidi’s William desk, designed with the well-being of children in mind, with a height-adjustable desk top, combined with a chair that adapts to the child’s growth.
Finally, pay attention to theorganisation of space and the presence of built-in drawers or additional elements, such as shelves and cupboards, to maintain an efficient and tidy work space. You can use, for example, drawers, shelves and accessories to keep all school materials within reach but off the main work surface.
Correctly positioning the desk in the bedroom is therefore crucial to creating an effective and healthy study environment. By considering factors such as natural lighting, ergonomics and organisation, it will be possible to set up a study area that favours concentration and the well-being of the child, without neglecting the aesthetic factor and the possibility of offering the youngest a space in which to give vent to their creativity.
